The manpage.

filter:
      This  is  the default table (if no ‐t option is passed).  It
      contains the built‐in chains INPUT (for packets destined  to
      local  sockets),  FORWARD  (for packets being routed through
      the box), and OUTPUT (for locally‐generated packets).
