The awards also enable faculty development and support students. The selections are part of NASA's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, or EPSCoR. The program helps develop partnerships between NASA research missions and programs, academic institutions and industry. It also helps states establish long-term academic research enterprises that will be self-sustaining and competitive and will contribute to the states' economic viability and development. A total of 27 proposals were selected for funding in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming. Winning proposals were selected through a merit-based, peer-reviewed competition.
