NASA ANNOUNCES AERONAUTICS RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

WASHINGTON - NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate has
amended its NASA Research Announcement to solicit additional research
proposals. The "Research Opportunities in Aeronautics 2007"
announcement solicits research in several new topic areas for the
Integrated Vehicle Health Management Project, and in entry, descent
and landing research, which is a combined effort by the Hypersonics
and Supersonics Projects.

The goal of the Integrated Vehicle Health Management Project is to
conduct research to advance the state of highly integrated and
complex flight-critical health management technologies and systems. A
key enabling technology will be the ability to discover the
precursors of a system or component failure. Researchers seek to
understand not only what happens when an anomalous event or trend is
identified, but also why that event occurred and the confluence of
factors that may have influenced it. To this end, the additional
topics in the amended announcement focus on data mining and
information analysis.

A goal of the Fundamental Aeronautics Program is to develop
technologies required to build future high mass Mars entry systems
that will enable large missions for the exploration of Mars and other
planets. These missions will require significant improvements in our
entry, descent, and landing capabilities. Addressing this problem
requires advances in computational tools and capabilities, advances
in modeling ofpertinent physical phenomena, improvements in our
capability to acquire relevant experimental data, and the development
of new architectures, concepts and technologies.

Specific evaluation criteria, deadlines and points of contact for
these research topics and other project areas are available in the
announcement at:
