Black Holes Raze Thousands of Stars to Fuel GrowthA new survey of over 100 galaxies by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has uncovered signs that black holes are demolishing thousands of stars in a quest to pack on weight. These new results suggest a somewhat violent path for at least some of these black holes to reach their present size – stellar destruction on a scale that has rarely if ever been seen before.
NASA, Partners Develop ‘Lunar Backpack’ Technology to Aid New Moon ExplorersNASA researchers and their industry partners have developed a remote-sensing mapping system set to aid explorers in the most isolated wilderness imaginable: the airless wastes at the South Pole of the Moon. The Kinematic Navigation and Cartography Knapsack is a mobile lidar scanner – a remote sensing method that uses light detection and ranging laser light to measure range
Space Station’s Quest for the Secrets of FireTo gain a deeper understanding of combustion phenomena, a team of investigators from academia, NASA’s Glenn Research Center and the agency’s Biological and Physical Sciences Division, and other organizations recently completed a series of investigations on the International Space Station. The in-orbit testing for the Advanced Combustion via Microgravity Experiments project began in 2017 and included six successful investigations of non-premixed flames of gaseous fuel.
NASA Builds Welding Test Article for SLS Exploration Upper StageNASA has completed manufacturing of a hydrogen tank barrel that will be tested as a weld confidence article for the Space Launch System rocket’s Exploration Upper Stage. Weld confidence articles help establish welding procedures and interfaces between the tooling and hardware and ensure the structural integrity of the welds.
Crew-4 Astronauts Head to Space Station to Conduct Microgravity ScienceNASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 mission is scheduled to launch to the International Space Station no earlier than April 26 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Learn more about the research riding with the crew aboard the SpaceX Dragon Freedom capsule into low-Earth orbit.
