Searching for Life in NASA’s Perseverance Mars SamplesNASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover is the agency’s ninth mission to land on the Red Planet. Along with characterizing the planet’s geology and climate, and paving the way for human exploration beyond the Moon, the rover is focused on astrobiology, or the study of life throughout the universe.
InSight Is Meeting Challenge of Winter on Dusty MarsNASA’s InSight lander recently received a two-year mission extension to detect more quakes, dust devils, and other phenomena on the surface of Mars. While the mission team plans to continue collecting data well into 2022, the increasing dustiness of the spacecraft’s solar panels and the onset of the Martian winter led to a decision to conserve power and temporarily limit the operation of its instruments.
Russian Cargo Craft Arrives at Space StationRussia’s Progress 77 resupply ship delivered over a ton of nitrogen, propellant, and oxygen Feb. 17 to the International Space Station. The Progress 77 docked to the Pirs docking compartment following a two-day trip that began with a launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
Hubble Uncovers Concentration of Small Black HolesAstronomers found something they weren't expecting at the heart of the globular cluster NGC 6397: a concentration of smaller black holes instead of a massive one. Precise measurements for stars in the cluster's core could only be made with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope over several years of observation
Lightweight Crane Technology Could Find Home on MoonNASA’s Lightweight Surface Manipulation System technology is scalable to fit any sized lander, vehicle, or surface application. Like a Swiss Army knife, it can use a toolbox of quick-interchange tools to hoist, forklift, regolith scoop, weld, and more.
