In Case You Missed It: A Weekly Summary of Top Content from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center

Week of July 6-10

NASA's InSight Flexes Its Arm While Its 'Mole' Hits Pause

NASA's InSight lander has been using its robotic arm to help the heat probe known as the "mole" burrow into Mars. The mission is providing the first look at the Red Planet's deep interior to reveal details about the formation of Mars and, ultimately, all rocky planets, including Earth. InSight is part of NASA's Discovery Program, managed by the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

NASA Assembles Artemis II Orion Stage Adapter

Marshall technicians have moved panels for the Artemis II Orion stage adapter to a large robotic welding machine. Engineers and technicians from NASA are joining the panels using a sophisticated friction-stir welding process to form the Orion stage adapter. This critical part of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket will send the Artemis II crew into lunar orbit.

Building Psyche: Design Done, Now Full Speed Ahead on Hardware

Psyche, the NASA mission to explore a metal-rock asteroid of the same name, recently passed a crucial milestone that brings it closer to its August 2022 launch date. Now the mission is moving from planning and designing to high-gear manufacturing of spacecraft hardware. Psyche is part of NASA's Discovery Program.

What is SLS Green Run Testing?

The core stage Green Run test series of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket is currently underway at the agency’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. The comprehensive, eight-part test series will steadily bring the core stage flight hardware, or new, “green” hardware, to life for the first time. Those tests and checks will culminate in a test fire replicating the stage’s first flight.

Alabama High School Students Create Meal NASA Will Send to Astronauts in Space

A team from Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, Alabama, won the HUNCH culinary competition, which challenged participants to create recipes that work in microgravity and meet astronaut nutritional standards.
