NASA Marshall Engineer Takes Safety to Another Level on Commercial Flight

At NASA, safety is part of everyday conversations and is reflected in the attitudes and behaviors of the workforce, creating a strong safety culture. As a passenger on a commercial flight, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center engineer Rumaasha Maasha demonstrated that safety-first mentality when spotted a malfunctioning vent valve leaking fuel and alerted the flight crew. The flight was rerouted and landed safely.


 

Space Launch System Flight Hardware Arrives at Kennedy Space Center

The second piece of flight-hardware for NASA’s new exploration-class rocket, the Space Launch System, arrived at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, last week. Built at Marshall, the Orion Stage Adapter traveled to Kennedy aboard NASA’s Super Guppy aircraft. The adapter will connect NASA's Orion spacecraft to the top part of the massive SLS rocket.


 

Giving Roots and Shoots Their Space: The Advanced Plant Habitat

The Advanced Plant Habitat, a recent addition to the International Space Station, is the largest growth chamber aboard the orbiting laboratory. Roughly the size of a mini-fridge, the habitat is designed to test which growth conditions plants prefer in space and provides specimens a larger root and shoot area.


 

Study Suggests Tens of Thousands of Black Holes Exist in Milky Way's Center

A new study, using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, has discovered a dozen black holes gathered around the supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The finding is the first to support a decades-old prediction, opening up myriad opportunities to better understand the universe.
