Alabama Winner of Student 3-D Print in Space Challenge to Visit State Legislature with NASA Officials

High-school senior Robert Hillan of Enterprise, Alabama, winner of a contest to design a tool for astronauts that can be 3-D printed in space, will join astronaut Scott Tingle and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center Director Patrick Scheuermann to talk with media during NASA Alabama Aerospace Day, Thursday, April 9 at the Alabama State House in Montgomery.

Niki Werkheiser, 3-D print project manager at the Marshall Center, will also be available at the press conference, from 10:40-10:55 a.m. April 9 in Joint Press Briefing Room 310 at the Alabama State House, 11 S. Union St., Montgomery.

Hillan won first-place in the Future Engineers 3-D Printing in Space Tool Challenge in January. Later this year, he will visit the Marshall Center in Huntsville, Alabama, to watch alongside Werkheiser and mission controllers in the Payload Operations Integration Center as his Multipurpose Precision Maintenance Tool is 3-D printed by astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

Hillan, Tingle and Scheuermann will meet with Gov. Robert Bentley, Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey and other state leaders throughout Thursday. They are also expected receive recognition on the state House and Senate floors.

The theme of NASA Alabama Aerospace Day 2015 is “Join Us on the Journey.” NASA exhibits on the 6th floor of the state house will highlight the Marshall Center's critical role in the development of the Space Launch System and the future of space exploration.
