NASA's Marshall Center to Host Ribbon-cutting Aug. 13 for New 'Green' Facility
What: On Aug. 13, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Building 4220, the latest environmentally friendly facility on its high-tech campus -- and one critical to the Marshall-led development of the nation's next flagship launch vehicle. Members of the Huntsville-area media are invited to attend. Building 4220 primarily will be home to engineers and technologists in Marshall’s Space Launch System (SLS) Program Office, supporting development and construction of the most powerful rocket ever built -- set in the coming decades to explore destinations across our solar system, including an asteroid and Mars. The new facility, designed and built to federally mandated standards of energy and water efficiency, has earned LEED® Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, the national standard for the development of high-performance, sustainable structures. The Marshall Center distinguished itself among NASA centers in 2006 by opening the doors of the first LEED® certified facility built by the agency: Building 4600, the anchor of the center's ultra-modern engineering complex. Who: Speakers will include U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama; U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama's 5th District; Lt. Col. Tom Nelson, deputy commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Mobile District; and Marshall Center Director Patrick Scheuermann. Ribbon-cutting participants will include Tom Cremins, senior policy adviser at NASA Headquarters in Washington; and Marshall Center Deputy Director Teresa Vanhooser. Steve Doering, director of Marshall's Office of Center Operations, will serve as master of ceremonies. When: Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2 p.m. CDT (A brief media availability is scheduled to follow the ribbon-cutting ceremony.) Where: Building 4220, at the southeast corner of Marshall’s 4200 administrative complex, at the intersection of Rideout/Neal roads and Labathe Avenue on Redstone Arsenal. Media must report to the Redstone Joint Visitor Control Center at Gate 9, Interstate 565 interchange at Rideout Road/Research Park Boulevard 45 minutes prior to the start of the event. Vehicles are subject to a security search. News media will need two forms of photo identification and proof of car insurance. Visitor parking is available on the south side of Building 4220.
