NASA Marshall Expert Bill Cooke Available to Discuss Geminid Meteor Shower

NASA will host two opportunities for the public and media to learn more about the annual Geminid meteor shower. This is the most intense meteor shower of the year visible for several days from Dec. 12 to 16.

On Dec.11, Marshall expert Bill Cooke will be available by teleconference for media interviews to discuss the Geminid meteor shower at 1p.m. CDT. To participate, reporters should call: 1-800-369-1137, passcode: geminid.

On Dec. 13, Cooke and a team of astronomers from Marshall Space Flight Center will host an overnight NASA web chat from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. CDT Dec. 13, answering questions about the Geminid meteor shower. The Geminids are expected to peak on the night of Dec. 13 this year with a predicted peak rate of 100 to 120 meteors per hour.

To join the webchat on Dec. 13, log into the chat page at: http://www.nasa.gov/connect/chat/geminids_2013.html a few minutes before the chat. A chat window will be active at the bottom of the page.

In addition, a Ustream feed from a telescope at Marshall will be available: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/nasa-msfc
