Cannot play *.mp4 files?

Thanks.  Got the svn thing like you said and installed it:  debian/
binary like it said to produce a deb file, which I installed.

The main problem is there is no alsa:

I looked up another thread and it said to install libasound2-dev so
did this and recompiled.

But it still does not work - no alsa audio output driver - above error
message.

Any help greatly appreciated.  I had mplayer working perfectly before
except for mp4 files.
