Well, I guess that it was still "lying around" and may at least get people to stop using rc2. Also the homepage does explain its intended purpose: For distros insisting on the FFmpeg 0.5 release, the current code just won't work with that (I think it won't even work with FFmpeg 0.6 unless at least the eval API changes are backported).
