mplayer can't seem to play 1080P raw 422 UYVY video at 120 Hz

Most likely this is not about performance but about the timing simply not being that precise, particularly with no audio to sync to.
Without audio it makes much more sense to let the monitor determine the playback speed by using e.g.
-vo gl -benchmark
