And what reason is there to "just" mock someone for suggesting it in
cases where using it is likely to solve the problem? The git repo has
worked better than svn in the majority of cases where I have suggested
it to people with specific problems. And it certainly has a lot better
VDPAU support than svn.

How would that help users? The improvements are already available to
them in git. About the only benefit would be to the users who are using
svn for historical reasons and don't know they would be better off with
git. And solving that by getting most of the users to switch to git
could be done with a lot less effort than by trying to move all the
changes to svn (which is in practice unrealistic).
