The git repo has worked better than svn in the majority of cases where I have suggested it to people with specific problems. How would that help users? The improvements are already available to them in git. About the only benefit would be to the users who are using svn for historical reasons and don't know they would be better off with git. And solving that by getting most of the users to switch to git could be done with a lot less effort than by trying to move all the changes to svn (which is in practice unrealistic).
