How can I force mplayer to drop frames more consistently?

For this use-case, you have to explicitly drop frames:
mplayer filename -vc ffh264vdpau -lavdopts skipframe=nonref

Current VDPAU hardware cannot decode (and display) 1080p60 and I doubt any
distributed revision control system can change that.
