The reason is that I have several videos that won't play on my home theatre
system because it is limited to a resolution of 800x600. And, no, I'd rather
not have to buy a new system at the moment. I just wondered if there might
be a way to quickly and easily rescale without fully recoding.

And I wasn't sure recoding would give me any significantly better quality,
given the time it would take to do it (even with a 4 core 3Ghz system it
might take longer to recode then the length of the video). But as you
surmised, and I found out, the quality was much worse, so it's probably best
to just fully recode.

So I'll just sit back, make some popcorn, have some coffee, and wait.

Thanks for the explanation, though.

FWIW: Necessity is the mother of invention. So we'll have to wait till some
scientist needs it :-).
