mencoder conversion to flac

Carl,

My email (gmail) won't let me upload the video (I cut it down to the first
few minutes, but it was still too much). Is there an ftp site I can upload
it to? If necessary, I can temporarily set up an ftp account on my network
for you.

Also, I would get the same results with other audio codecs (pcm_*, for
example).

Attached here is the output from mplayer playing the good video, followed by
the output when playing the ffmpeg flac converted version.
