sound too loud

I'm having a sound problem with mplayer on a brand new F12 installation.
When I play any file mplayer always starts with the volume at 100%. The
volume does work, I can lower it during the playback, but it's deafening
upon start up. I haven't disabled yet pulseaudio and it may very well be
a pulseaudio problem, but where do I start looking? This is what mplayer
says when it starts:

mplayer MVI_3695.AVI
MPlayer SVN-r29800-4.4.2 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team
