There are "video stabilizers" that are used to remove some kinds of copy-protection from VHS tapes. Some of them claim to refresh the sync pulses. If they do so, they might fill the empty spaces on your tapes with proper sync signals, so the frame grabber may stay in sync and continue to produce digital frames.
