Frame rate for MTS files

I always use mplayer and mencoder to view my .mts movies from my HD
camcorder. They are 1080 50i AVHCD files. mplayer always detects 25 fps
and thus I had to use the "-fps 50" option for both viewing and
decoding. In recent versions of mplayer this option has no effect
anymore on all my H264 encoded movies. It still works for xvid etc.. It
does say "FPS forced to be 50.000" but still plays at 25fps. Encoding
with mencoder is at the wrong frame rate too. I'm not sure whether this
is an mplayer or ffmpeg or even x264 related issue. I filed a bug at
http://bugzilla.mplayerhq.hu/show_bug.cgi?id=1595. Does anybody else use
mplayer with 50i material?
