Replying to my own post ...

Yes, indeed it is. The solution (im my case, at least) to _some_ OTA-
recorded mp2 is -ao alsa:device=plughw=0.3 Which was (almost) staring 
me in the face in the man page, but the significance of it was not 
obvious.
