Carl, thanks. It's helpful o know hat something _should_ work when dealing with many alternaives. I updated to the latest drivers from Nvidia and now vdapu works. Alas, my problem still exists. But as the buffer problem has been resolved, I need to be more specific. There are two things, perhaps related, although I think not. First audio leads video by several seconds; I've been able to improve but not eliminate that be tweaking -mc. Second, after some minutes, I hear sharp cracks in the audio stream. I can eliminate them temporarily by seeking forward a bit. I would guess that "a52: CRC check failed!" marks the problem. Any thoughs?
