mencoder: creates unusual AVI?

Hi,
I am trying to create an .avi movie which can be played with something else than mplayer. The movie has no sound and is produced from a sequence of several hundred jpeg images with this commandline: mencoder mf://im/Composite00*.jpg -mf w=1500:h=1163:fps=2:type=jpg -ovc copy -oac copy -of avi -o im/Composite.avi I have also tried the options -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:trell, but the result is the same: plays fine with mplayer, but not with quicktime. When I try to play it with quicktime, I get the message that additional software is needed, and I'm redirected to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html
If I play the movie nonetheless, it's just a black screen.
I'm doing this on a Mac with OS 10.5.6, the mplayer/mencoder binary 1.0rc2-4.0.1 (yes I know it's not the latest, but I can't compile it myself), and quicktime 7.6.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Thomas
