panscan not working

Hi all

I have an issue with panscan in both slave mode and normal (hitting e and w in full screen). The gui shows the bar, and the amount changes in response to the keypresses, but the image doesn't change!

Now, on my workmates laptop, it does work. The test video (I tried many) is a 4:3 video, we are both paying it on non 4:3 displays. Playing it full screen, and hitting the w and e buttons "zooms" the video - cutting off the image at the top and bottom until the left and right sides extend to the width of the screen. This is the behaviour I want, but can't seem to make it happen on mine.

I am using the xv output for video out. I am using version 1.0rc2-4.3.3 (compiled myself), my mates version is 1.0rc2 also (I am unsure of the minor numbers). Here is the output from the command line of mplayer not working :

Perhaps I should try an older stable version, but I was having issues with audio sync on the default unbuntu which I think is 1.0 rc2-0ubuntu19 which doesn't look like an official version....

What other things should I try? The output driver does not seem to matter.
