Did you already try other values for dvd:// ?
Did you already try dvdnav:// (also with 2, iiuc)?

As already said, you should absolutely stay with -vo xv or -vo gl:yuv=2 (not:
-vo gl, that is always slower) - which one of those is faster depends on factors
unknown to me.
You may also consider using nvidia's binary driver and get vdpau support.
