I did this for an installation in a movie theatre. Audio hardware was six 
channel. Four went to the surround system, and two were used for operator's 
preview sound.

Add to that the need to do creative mixing to derive four-point Dolby A/SR 
surround from 5.1 DVD tracks for the main sound system, and you have 
something that probably only mplayer could have done, off the shelf.
