Before one applying different renderings I'd suggest taking care of the
color palette for DVD subtitles would be a much more rewarding task.

As DVD subtitles come in DVD (PAL/NTSC) resolution and are composited
together with the image prior to scaling to fullscreen, I don't think
it's feasible applying a different scaling method to the subtitles than
to the rest of the movie. And fullscreen scaling is typically done in
the graphics hardware, so there's even less accessibility to it.
