People who see a release named 1.0rc2 assume that has less problems than a random snapshot, which is not true in mplayer's case. The solution is to avoid people seeing the release. An explanatory text on the download page would help too. "MPlayer does not do releases. The best version is almost always the most recent SVN snapshot built from source." It would probably also be a good idea to remove (or rather, move in the "old" section) links to binaries of old versions (more than three months).
