The patch titled vmscan: fix initial shrinker size handling has been added to the -mm tree. Its filename is vmscan-fix-initial-shrinker-size-handling.patch Before you just go and hit "reply", please: a) Consider who else should be cc'ed b) Prefer to cc a suitable mailing list as well c) Ideally: find the original patch on the mailing list and do a reply-to-all to that, adding suitable additional cc's *** Remember to use Documentation/SubmitChecklist when testing your code *** See http://userweb.kernel.org/~akpm/stuff/added-to-mm.txt to find out what to do about this The current -mm tree may be found at http://userweb.kernel.org/~akpm/mmotm/ ------------------------------------------------------ Subject: vmscan: fix initial shrinker size handling From: Konstantin Khlebnikov <khlebnikov@xxxxxxxxxx> A shrinker function can return -1, means that it cannot do anything without a risk of deadlock. For example prune_super() does this if it cannot grab a superblock refrence, even if nr_to_scan=0. Currently we interpret this -1 as a ULONG_MAX size shrinker and evaluate `total_scan' according to this. So the next time around this shrinker can cause really big pressure. Let's skip such shrinkers instead. Also make total_scan signed, otherwise the check (total_scan < 0) below never works.
