The patch titled mm: compaction: abort compaction if too many pages are isolated and caller is asynchronous V2 has been added to the -mm tree. Its filename is mm-compaction-abort-compaction-if-too-many-pages-are-isolated-and-caller-is-asynchronous-v2.patch Before you just go and hit "reply", please: a) Consider who else should be cc'ed b) Prefer to cc a suitable mailing list as well c) Ideally: find the original patch on the mailing list and do a reply-to-all to that, adding suitable additional cc's *** Remember to use Documentation/SubmitChecklist when testing your code *** See http://userweb.kernel.org/~akpm/stuff/added-to-mm.txt to find out what to do about this The current -mm tree may be found at http://userweb.kernel.org/~akpm/mmotm/ ------------------------------------------------------ Subject: mm: compaction: abort compaction if too many pages are isolated and caller is asynchronous V2 From: Mel Gorman <mgorman@xxxxxxx> Asynchronous compaction is used when promoting to huge pages. This is all very nice but if there are a number of processes in compacting memory, a large number of pages can be isolated. An "asynchronous" process can stall for long periods of time as a result with a user reporting that firefox can stall for 10s of seconds. This patch aborts asynchronous compaction if too many pages are isolated as it's better to fail a hugepage promotion than stall a process.
