It was python-qt-3.8 from debian unstable, compiled with
"gcc (GCC) 3.3.2 (Debian)" and binutils
"2.14.90.0.7 20031029 Debian GNU/Linux"

An attempt to link with CVS ld shows the same BFD assertion.
