indy net boot problems

hello,

i'm new to sgi hardware, but i have aquired an indy and i would like to contribute to the mips port.

however i have not been able to boot the indy via bootp from the PROM. it boots fine from the hard disk into irix, but it seems to ignore bootp replies when netbooting.

the indy is a R5000 with PROM dated 12 Feb 1996.
as boot servers, i have a sun sparc20 running solaris 2.6 and an x86 PC with redhat 7.3... in desperation i have also tried replace dhcp with CMUs bootpd 2.4.3

using a sniffer i can see the indy broadcasting an arp for its ip address, and then sending a bootp request.
the boot server (same results for CMU bootpd or dhcpd from redhat 7.3 or solaris 2.6) sends a bootp reply.
after 5 seconds the indy sends another request and another reply is sent by the server... another 5 seconds and another bootp request/reply and then the indy gives up... (no attempt is made to get the boot file with tftp)

i've tried unsetting netaddr as suggested in the faq, but that made not difference...
i cannot work out why the indy is ignoring the bootp replies???

any help/suggestions will be most appreciated...
thanks
michal.
