I could not disable swap --- by which I assume you mean that I should
turn off virtual memory in the "Control Panel"?

But, I was able to follow all the other advice. I had a little device
that let me make my MMC look like a regular card that I could insert
into my laptop and then run mkdosfs and it seems to have fixed the
problem!

Thanks to everyone for advice especially Damien Challet and James Knott!
