formatting /media/mmc{1,2} as ext3?

I just got an N810. I am a long-time Linux user. Is it possible to reformat
/media/mmc{1,2} as ext3 (or ext2). Does the default kernel have those file
systems modules? Does the default installation contain mkfs.ext{2,3} and
fsck.ext{2,3}. If not, are prebuilt versions available for download somewhere?
Will something else break? Or should I forget about this because it is too
much trouble?
