You can install this way for applications that are offered as straight .debs or you can choose to manually browse the repositories in the browser to download. The time it would take though to download would be the same as you'd be needing for a straight install so I'm not sure how much time you are really saving. The advantage of the repository installer file is that you can see updates from the apps you've installed and if there are additional library files required they usually get installed at the same time preventing (many) errors.
