I personally prefer statusbar-clock:

The statusbar applet looks like this:
  * http://mg.pov.lt/n800-balaton-vkb.png (light theme)
  * http://mg.pov.lt/fbreader-toc-marks.png (dark theme)

It shows the date if you tap on it.

I'm rather surprised, but statusbar-clock it's not listed in
<http://downloads.maemo.org>.  You can install it from
<http://mg.pov.lt/770/statusbarclock.install>.  That's a version I
patched to support dark themes (bug
<https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=306&group_id=167&atid=700>)
