Then I took a peek at the old application catalog in the old wiki and discovered http://www.maemo.org.br/platform/apt/ which seems to have the same contents, but a slightly more authoritative-looking URL. I've created a single-click install file and put it on http://downloads.maemo.org/product/gnumeric I'm now testing the installation on both 770 and N800. My, Gnumeric weighs 10 megs, what a pig.
