Thats right on the lowest level you use kismet to scan the networks and save the informations like SSID, CHANNEL ENCRYPTION TYPE. Then collect datas on a defined SSID. After that you get a nice dump file on your mmc. Now use aircrack to find the key. Thats the reason why you need both progs. but this lower level works fine with WEP. After collecting datas for abaout 15 - 30 Min. Aircrack needs about 5- 15 sec. to get the key. Aircrack appeared to have had the same bug that was fixed in kismet. Does it still have that bug, or has the fix propogated ? gpsd is a useful tool in conjunction with kismet. For a useful pen test tool, Nessus would be a rather interesting tool to port. Could be too heavy though & the latest versions are closed source now.
