Yes, the driver was integrated into the kernel a couple of weeks ago.
lease try the latest kernel, or the latest stand-alone driver from
http://www.roeck-us.net/linux/drivers/.

Key problem, as you had suggested, was that some of the Inetrsil chips 
need a short delay between I2C accesses.
