I'd be fine with putting the rebuild bits in an infrastructure specific
source file or something instead of the historical phase5.c if it makes
the result cleaner, but I also don't generally expect to be able to
review patches straight from the diff so nbd to me either way.

It would be interesting if diff could be told to not intersperse changes
so much for a particular patch that's just replacing swaths of code.
Hmm... 'git show --patience' actually seems to help a bit with that on
this patch. Never knew that existed..
