I will make it a standalone patchset (change the variables + minimum of other changes to make it work, then another patch to ditch some type casting). I think I can send the patches today if it goes well. It would be nice to change types in some of the structures too, but this might lead to changes outside of mkfs, so I'm skipping them for this moment to keep it simple.
