Please post your hostapd.conf. I don't have any ath9k hardware and cannot check that it works with, but other wireless devices work with

channel=1
ssid=test2

#wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
#wpa_pairwise=CCMP
#wpa_passphrase="deleted"
