No reason to be more "pure" about this than the major manufacturers with FCC / CE certification (e.g. Motorola, Proxim, Trango, Tranzio, Ubiquiti, etc ). Besides any liability lies with the manufacturer / installer, certainly not Ath5k / Madwifi developers.

channels? It just seems odd.

No, I'm not aware of such limitations.  OK, you are not aware of such
limitations either, then perhaps we can go ahead with the narrow
channels.
