As an update, this appears to be exactly related to https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=201761 In comment 75 Rafael Wysocki links another thread on the mailing list in which there is a supposedly working patch. Hopefully this can be accepted mainline soon after testing.
