Hi Andrea, Michael,

I have a pcmcia RealTek 8180L wireless card [1]. This card seems to don't work
with the official kernel driver.
Using the 2.6.28-rc [2] the card goes up, but it doesn't associate to the
Access Point (with and without encryption).

I tried also the Ubuntu 8.10 kernel with the same results.

The dmesg says (00:90:96... is the Access Point):
[...]
[ 764.724277] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[ 765.952118] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:90:96:47:16:1d
[ 766.152083] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:90:96:47:16:1d
[ 766.352140] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:90:96:47:16:1d
[ 766.552093] wlan0: authentication with AP 00:90:96:47:16:1d timed out
[...]

iwconfig says:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"ghigowlan"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=27 dBm
          Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Sometime I note that the Access Point appears in the iwconfig output. But the
net still doesn't work.

I think that the problem is in the latest kernel because with a (OLD) kernel
2.6.18 and the driver availables on the site rtl-wifi.sourgeforce.net, the
device work quite well (w/ encryption).

Enclosed you can see the uname, dmesg, lsmod, lspci, iwconfig, ifconfig for both
the kernel 2.6.28-rc2 and 2.6.18-6-686+driver from rtl-wifi.

If your need more info, please doesn't hesitate to contact me.

Goffredo
