Madwifi is the current/older driver for most Atheros chipsets, itrelies on a binary HAL component:http://madwifi.org/wiki/About/MadWifi?redirectedfrom=MadWifi
ath5k (found in compat-wireless) is a replacement for that driver. Itis fully open source and uses mac80211. This page explains it:http://madwifi.org/wiki/About/ath5k
