Thanks for scratching your head on this. We cannot change mwifiex because of its broader installation on embedded devices and laptops. And it is definitely more widely used as 11ac than 11n.

We can add Avastar if preferred (not required but ok). Main thing about mwlwifi is that it differs from others for its mac80211 compatibility. Should we use 
"Marvell Avastar 88W8864/88W8897 PCIe driver (mac80211 compatible)"?
