Sync and async type indicates if the thread just queues the command or it queues the command and waits until command response is received. Next command is sent to firmware only after receiving response of previous command. As we don't queue any command after SHUTDOWN command is queued, SHUTDOWN command is the last command sent to firmware. SHUTDOWN is a sync command. Hence remove handler thread waits until it's response. Please let me know if there are any doubts.
