The Linux Foundation is the home for the new MeeGo project, which combines the former Intel-backed Moblin and Nokia-backed Maemo Linux-based initiatives. The project is being hosted as a fully open source project, encouraging community contributions in line with the best practices of the open source development model.
MeeGo is designed for cross-device, cross-architecture computing and is built from the ground up for a new class of powerful computing devices. The Linux Foundation expects MeeGo to be adopted widely by device manufacturers, network operators, software vendors and developers across multiple device types and for many organizations and developers to participate in the project.

In January, the Linux Foundation announced a free webinar series to help meet increasing demand for Linux professionals. The series is designed to enable attendees to learn the fundamentals of Linux directly from the source of Linux, the developers themselves. The webinar series will feature Linux Foundation technical advisory board (TAB) members and other community developers. The first Webinar in the series is “How To Contribute to the Linux Community,” led by Jon Corbet, and available March 1.

Wall Street Journal: Intel and Nokia Get "Cute" with Mobile Software"
"If you wrote an application to run on an ARM chip, a developer most likely would have to run a process called recompilation to create a version that would run on a device using an x86 microprocessor, noted Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, which will help oversee MeeGo’s development, as it had Moblin’s. Still, the work for developers should be a lot less, Zemlin said. He noted that Intel and Nokia see MeeGo as not at all limited to smartphones, but to be a platform for creating applications for netbook-style PCs, TVs, cars and other products. 'They are thinking about this as a platform for things people haven’t even dreamed of yet,' Zemlin said.

"In a blog post this week, Zemlin fired back at comments Bach made to financial analysts at CES (consumer electronics show) that there is too much complexity in Linux and too many versions for phone carriers to manage. The Linux Foundation's “We’re Linux” video contest is back for its second year and aims to find the best user-generated videos that demonstrate what Linux means to those who use it and inspire others to try it.
The contest is
calling all community members and amateur filmmakers
to share with the public what a 30-60 second Linux-focused spot for the
Super Bowl might look like. This theme is not a requirement for entry;
however, videos that can demonstrate the benefits of Linux to the
general public are likely to receive more community votes.
Submissions are being accepted through midnight on April 4, 2010. The winner will be revealed at the Linux Foundation’s Collaboration Summit on April 14, 2010 in San Francisco and will be awarded with a laptop loaded with Linux and a trip to LinuxCon in Boston, Mass.
The winner will be determined by a combination of online community ranking and a panel of judges that includes:
• Andrew Morton,
lead Linux kernel maintainer;
• Stephen O’Grady, co-founder, Red Monk;
• Stormy Peters, executive director, GNOME Foundation;
• Brandon Phillips, Linux kernel developer, Novell;
• Bob Sutor, VP, Open Source and Linux, IBM Software Group; and
• Steven Vaughan-Nichols, journalist, ComputerWorld.
