==> Linux Foundation Introduces Linux-Branded Affinity Visa Platinum Credit Card <==

The Linux Foundation announced it will offer an affinity Visa Platinum credit card for people who want to contribute to advancing the Linux operating system through Linux Foundation initiatives.

“This credit card is in response to requests by individuals who want to get involved and support the Linux Foundation’s community activities,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. “Some people write code while others work on marketing or defending Linux. The Linux-branded credit card is an easy way for anyone to contribute to the growth of Linux and identify themselves as supporters of the community by carrying Tux in their pocket.”

For every card activation, the Linux Foundation will receive $50 as well as a percentage of every purchase made with the credit card. All funds from the Visa card program will go directly toward providing community technical events and providing travel grants for open source community members in order to accelerate Linux innovation.

==> Open Source for America Promotes FOSS for Government <==

As the US struggles with a continuing recession, both the private and public sectors are looking for ways to cut or mitigate operating costs, particularly in the arena of information technology.

Starting in July, a new coalition of technology industry companies, organizations, and academic institutions will be actively promoting one sure way of cutting IT costs: using open source software and open technology solutions.

Open Source for America is a group of more than 50 organizations with the primary mission of "the promotion of open source software in the US Federal government arena."

==> Telco Planning Joins Linux Foundation  <==

The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced that Telco Planning has joined the organization. Telco Planning provides consulting services to network operators that encompass technology evaluation, business plan modeling, network design, integration and installation.

“Telco Planning has a long history of participating in the evolution of Carrier Grade Linux and being a conduit between vendors and carriers,” said Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs, The Linux Foundation. “Their expertise will be an important contribution to the Linux Foundation and all of its members as Linux becomes even more pervasive in network environments.”

==> LinuxCon Keynote Speaker Garbee Interviewed <==

As LinuxCon moves closer, we've been talking to the keynote speakers for the event, to get a sense of what their message to attendees will be and to give attendees a better sense of where the message is coming from. Next up in our series of interviews is Bdale Garbee, Chief Technologist for Open Source and Linux at Hewlett-Packard. Garbee is a steady fixture in the Linux community, known for his work at HP as well as Debian Project Leader. His keynote "The Freedom to Collaborate," will delve into innovation from open source and how to keep that innovation alive.

ChannelWeb: Microsoft Admits That Linux Desktop Elephant Exists
In the 10-K, Microsoft also said Linux is gaining acceptance in emerging markets due to cost pressures on PC makers that have fueled the rise of lower-price PC form factors, i.e. netbooks. Particularly telling was Microsoft mentioning that Hewlett-Packard and Intel -- two of its closest industry partners -- have been "actively working with alternative Linux-based operating systems." HP sells Linux servers, notebooks and netbooks, and Intel has played a leading role in Moblin, an open source application stack for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), netbooks and nettops that is now being run by the Linux Foundation.

The Register: Linux Foundation Urges Fans to Sign Up to Visa Credit Card
The Linux Foundation hopes to raise cash by branding a Visa card with its cutesy Tux mascot. Executive director of the org, Jim Zemlin, said people can carry "Tux in their pocket" to show their support for Linux.

Computerworld: Group to Push Open Source in U.S. Government
Members of the Open Source For America coalition, which launched Wednesday, include Google, The Linux Foundation, the Mozilla and Debian projects, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). The coalition's goal is not to convince the U.S. government to favor open-source software over proprietary code, but to give open source an equal chance to win government contracts, said Tom Rabon, executive vice president for corporate affairs at Red Hat. In recent years, some open-source groups, particularly outside the U.S., have pushed governments to mandate open-source software instead of using software from U.S.-based Microsoft.

Web Worker Daily: In the Market for a Netbook? Watch the OS Developments
There has also been much hubbub surrounding Linux-based netbooks. While it may not be immediately apparent, both the Intel-backed Moblin operating system and Google’s upcoming Chrome OS are based on Linux. Intel has handed the keys to Moblin over to The Linux Foundation, and it’s being squarely aimed at netbooks. There’s a good chance that Moblin-based netbooks will arrive by the end of the year. Moblin is getting notice for its very fast boot times and its performance, and because it’s an open-source operating system, it may arrive in ultra-inexpensive netbooks. If you aren’t planning to get a netbook for a few months, it’s worth keeping on your radar.

The Register: Microsoft: GPL Violation Didn't Drive Linux Donation
Leaders of the Linux community, meanwhile, continue to express their support for the code drop itself. Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin, in conversation with The Reg at OSCON, called it "good behavior we want to encourage. I look at the fact Microsoft not so long ago said the GPL was terrible and open-source software is a cancer, and now it's part of the process. I see that as good, it's good for Linux that the tide has definitely turned."

IT World: What's "Linux on the Desktop" Mean, When We Don't Know What a Desktop Is, Anymore?
At last week's Open Source Convention, the role of identifying the major Linux trends and challenges was given to Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. First, there's much to cheer about in the Linux and open source communities, Zemlin said, in every venue from mobile to high-performance computing. "Today, in the modern world, everyone uses Linux multiple times a day, even if they don't know it," he said. The economy is benefiting open source because of cost reasons; it's expanding and accelerating existing trends. Even Microsoft is actively participating in Linux, and attending OSCON.

Sometimes you need to hit rock bottom before you can get the help you need. IDC acted as an “interventionist” today publishing a new report showing how open source is growing in the down economy. The study released today shows, “worldwide revenue from open source software will grow at a 22.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to reach $8.1 billion by 2013.
